BOYNE FALLS, Mich. -- Construction is underway on what is being called the world’s longest timber-towered suspension bridge.
Boyne Mountain ski resort in Michigan expects SkyBridge Michigan will be completed in June 2022. The 1,203-ft long and 118-ft high pedestrian bridge will span the chasm between the peak of McLouth, near the top terminal of the resort’s express chairlift, and end at the summit of Disciples Ridge.
The bridge features a timber-frame design constructed of lumber locally sourced by Matelski Lumber company in Boyne Falls, Michigan. The resort’s website refers to the bridge as “Michigan’s second bridge,” after the historic Mackinac Bridge, which connects its north and south peninsulas.
Guests will ride one of several chairlifts to the mountain’s top, then take a walk along the pedestrian bridge, which also connects to Boyne Mountain’s extensive paved resort trail system.
According to the resort, the SkyBridge will provide “Panoramic valley views and extensive light displays [that] are a guaranteed camera pleaser. Open year-round, every season has a reason to take in the views from this architectural masterpiece.”
